The history and commemoration of the Second World War air raids on Sheffield
The air raid sirens rang out across the city at 7pm 76 years ago today. Once again, Sheffielders heard the sirens warn that the German bombers were on their way. Each previous time the planes had flown on to other cities. Sheffielders were getting used to false alarms. This time the bombs began to drop on Sheffield. They started at 7:40pm and didn’t stop until early morning. Hundreds of people died and thousands of properties were burnt or bombed out.
